Mathematics

Numbers, numbers, numbers!   That's what everyone thinks about math.  In MYP, it's much more than that.  Students are engaged in project-based activities that require them to apply mathematical concepts in real world scenarios.  From cost analysis in Timmy's Tool Shop to coordinate plain stained glass creations, our IB learners are experiencing a wide variety of work that challenges them to think critically and analytically.
Kindergarten

Welcome to the world of KINDERGARTEN!!
The past few months have been an AWESOME one with learning our ABC's, counting, making new friends, and finding where Club 302 is! (If you didn't know, it's the nurse's office).
In September we got to witness hurricane Irma (It was my first time, so that was pretty cool.) We also got to learn about a man named Johnny Chapmen (but they call him Johnny Appleseed). In October we got to be a part of Pumpkin PaLoOzA! I learned how to add all my points from a bean bag toss, plant my very own pumpkin seed, make SLIM out of pumpkin pulp and seeds. I got to make a cookie like in the book "Spooky"!
From what I heard, we are leaving a Fall Feast in November. In December we have our FIRST field trip! We even get to go around the world and learn about different Holidays!
2017 is going to end PRETTY awesome! I'll make sure my teacher's take TONS of pictures so you can see them!
1st Grade

It has been going great so far, even with the hiccup from Hurricane Irma!

We celebrated our Fall Festival and 50th day of school with a sock hop.  We had our living vs. nonliving project where the class has kept one plant in the dark, and the other one in the sun. The class will also have a dwarf rabbit visiting!

2nd Grade

As a first year Falcon, my new Franklin Family has not disappointed!  Everyone has been friendly, supportive, and truly welcoming.  Our second grade team is simply amazing.  Talk about family… we call ourselves sisters to the second power (exponent).  We are not only blessed to have each other, but we are blessed to have the most amazing second grade students.  Our second graders love books, we really enjoyed participating in our school’s Book Fair.  We went on our first field trip of the school year in late October, to the Museum of Discovery and Science – MODS.  We had a great time at the IMAX Theater and exploring the museum.

In second grade, we also enjoy learning through experiments, to make discoveries and test a hypothesis through demonstrations and using scientific procedures.  We especially love when we learn new things from each other. Our students will be celebrating Thanksgiving together with a Feast catered by Cracker Barrel, that will be served outside on the picnic tables on Friday November 17th.  This celebration is quite fitting considering we are a close and united bunch, with lots to be thankful for.  We are so excited to see what is ahead of us for December and the new year.  I’m sure wherever our journey takes us it will be full of adventure, excitement, and learning!  Stay tuned…

3rd Grade

We are proud of all the hard work the students have been doing! Third grade is a huge transition and we look forward to watching the students grow.

In the month of November, we will be having our annual fall rotations! We will be focusing on the Europeans settlers, as well as, the Native Americans.

We look forward to going to Kennedy Space Center in May! We also have a few trips that are in the works.

Stay tuned for photos!

Upcoming Activity!

Fourth grade is getting ready to celebrate Fall! On November 21st we will have our Fall Rotation Festival. Students will have an opportunity to learn about Fall across the curriculum.  Each classroom will have an educational game or activity in a specific subject area (Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies). The students will travel from one classroom to another to work on the activities. It will be a fun and interactive learning experience. At the closing of the Festival, students will enjoy treats, snacks and refreshments! We want to thank our parent volunteers for helping with the decorations and logistics for our activity!  4th Grade is FALL-ing for Learning!

5th Grade

Fifth grade started out very strong with a group of committed teachers. Our goal is to score higher on FSA proficiency than last year.

Some events taking place in the upcoming months are our field trip to Dickson State Park and our Thanksgiving Feast.

A few changes have come to chess this year. Chess moved from everyday classes for a semester to every other day for the school year.

Chess will be having a class tournament in the month of November.

Principal's Desk

Franklin Families,

Welcome to the first edition of our Falcon Scoop for the 2017-2018 school year.  Hurricane Irma set our publishing schedule off a bit for the first quarter.  During our first quarter, we welcomed families on campus for our Open House events, held our first parent workshop on Study Skills, administered our first iReady diagnostic for the year, hosted another successful Book Fair, and celebrated Spirit Week.  We are now in full swing in our 2nd quarter.  We started the quarter celebrating Red Ribbon Week and have completed Benchmark testing for our 2nd-8th graders.  As you’ve also seen the emails, we are continuing the improvement process by embarking on System Accreditation with our Engagement Review to be hosted in spring of 2018.  I look forward to Continuing the Journey with you this quarter, please enjoy the snippets happening across our campus.

Educationally yours,

Ms. Alexandra Piperakis-LeRose, M.Ed.

Principal | IB MYP Head of School

Language &
Literature

In sixth grade, Language Arts students have been working on figurative language and analyzing poetry. They studied the poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou. Seventh grade students also did a Famous Failures project.  Each student researched someone that has an obstacle or failure that they overcame.  It was a part of the learning about growth mindsets and the power of yet.

In seventh grade, students spent quarter 1 working on the collection, Bold Actions.  They focused on main idea and details and story elements including theme.  They  also read Greek myths, including “The Flight Of Icarus”.  The students had to create a comic strip depicting the major events from the story.  At the same time, students began their writing lessons with a review of expository/informative writing, by reviewing the outline and the Introduction paragraph of this type of essay.  For Quarter 2, students will be reading various informative texts that focus on the effects of technology in our society. Students will be creating projects related to this theme, while still focusing on the essential of writing.

Finally, eighth grade students began the year with a unit on Culture and Belonging. They read stories written from the perspective of immigrants to America and then completed a project that allowed them to research their own families’ cultural backgrounds. Next, students launched into a study of the horror genre, reading a short story by Edgar Allen Poe and then writing their own creative spin-off of the story “The Tell-Tale Heart”. Students also focused on the fundamentals of the expository essay. In the second quarter, students will be reading various slave narratives, writing their own autobiographies, analyzing arguments, and working on persuasive writing.

Individuals &
Societies

The school year has been amazing so far. The students are very enthusiastic and ready to learn! The students did a Lucy project where a song or rap time capsule is used in comparison to the Incas and Mayans. The project also contains information about the ancient civilizations.

The 6th graders worked together to create IB projects and use in cross-curricular.

New Staff Members

Welcome back staff from last year along with all the newest members of our Falcon family!

FACC welcomed almost 30 new members into our Franklin family this year. We are excited to "Continue the Journey" with our first year Falcons.

Sports

Basketball

The 2016-2017 basketball season has come to an end. Both Coach Williams and Coach Souza couldn’t be more proud of their teams for all their hard work and dedication.

The girls’ basketball team capped their season by defeating New Renaissance for their 4th win of the season.

The boys’ basketball team ended the season with a hard fought loss to the current division champion New Renaissance.

Cheerleading

A special thanks to our cheerleading coaches Mrs. DiCambio and Ms. Rose who helped prepare our lady Falcon cheerleaders for all their new cheers and routines this year. The cheerleaders helped create an amazing basketball atmosphere and helped motivate our players.

Volleyball

Boys and girls volleyball is back! Tryouts were held the first Monday in December. Coach Williams and Coach Souza are very excited to begin another successful volleyball season built around a lot of returning starters and some new key additions.

Career
Education

The spirit of entrepreneurship is in the air for our Career Education students as they embarked on experiencing what it is like to be a business owner.  In the first quarter, students had an opportunity to create their own “small business.”  Coach Williams and I were just blown away by the creativity and effort that went into this IB project.  Students had to dig into the four stages of the design cycle and learn about how each phase related to the creation of not only their business idea but also the marketing materials involved in advertising.  Students were tasked with creating an enlarged version of their personal business card to represent their company.  It was an amazing effort and we are so proud to display their student work in the halls and classroom.

In quarter two, the students will team up with each other to select a lead business.  Next, they will create a charity and decide on a cause to support and come up with a fundraiser event.  The teams will make a flyer to advertise their event, and present it to the class including financial projections on how much they will raise for charity!  Finally, the students will reflect on this project and evaluate its success.  Going into the holiday season, we feel it is a great way to expose the students to give back and also reinforces our lesson on how local businesses support the community.

The boy's team did not record a loss this season and had a key victory over Imagine Broward .The girl's team defeated Imagine Broward and fell just 3 points shy of the playoffs.  Coach Rodriguez, Coach Williams and Coach Carnaggie are extremely proud of all their student-athletes for their hard work and dedication this soccer year. We will miss our 8th-grade student-athletes who are moving on to High School but are very excited about our future with our underclassmen.

Volleyball

Volleyball: The 2017-2018 Volleyball is rapidly approaching, the tryouts should be at the end of November. We should have more details in the next week or so.

Basketball

The 2017-2018 basketball season has kicked off and is underway. Coach Williams is coaching both the boys and girls basketball teams. Coach Williams is excited to see the strides made in his offensive system and both teams playing tough defence. The basketball teams are headed in the right direction and are eager to get back on the court this week.

Cheerleading

Coach Hollis and her cheerleaders have created an amazing atmosphere during the basketball season. The cheerleaders have not only pumped up the players but the crowd as well. The halftime shows have been outstanding and the girls are definitely representing Franklin Academy in an amazing way. The larger squad is making their presence felt with their new cheers and halftime routines.
